Every now and then, someone gives me a hard time about talking about making money from retreats, reminding me that yoga was traditionally passed down from guru to student as an act of seva. I get it, I really do. But leading a retreat isnโt the same as teaching a class out of the kindness of your heart to be of service and then going home. And weโre not gurus- weโre regular people with bills to pay, and unfortunately, love and light donโt cover rent.โฃ

Leading a retreat is a ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด. It means being present from the Itโs teaching 10-12 classes in a week, keeping the group on schedule, handling last-minute surprises, and being a leader, a chaperone, and an emotional rock for your students. Not to mention the hundreds of hours that go into planning and executing it all. Itโs ๐ฏ๐น๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ, ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐- and when we donโt get an energetic match for what we put out, ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ creeps in. Trust me on this.โฃ

Even the clients I work with who say they โdonโt care about making moneyโ on their retreat always ask me the same thing afterward: โHow much did I make?โ Because it was a lot! Wouldnโt it feel better to come home with both an ๐ถ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ ๐ฒ๐
๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ and the ๐ณ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ that allows you to keep ๐๐ต๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ฝ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐๐๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐?โฃ

Making money from your retreat isnโt selfishโit could allow you to:โฃ
โ Pay your rent for the next few monthsโฃ
โ Take a teacher trainingโฃ
โ Support a friend in needโฃ
โ Take your kids somewhere newโฃ
โ Pay off a credit cardโฃ
โ Get your car fixedโฃ
โ Finally take a vacation and truly relaxโฃ
โ Support a charityโฃ
โ Make upgrades to your studioโฃ

When you take care of yourself (and those around you), you show up 1000x better for your students because you feel more safe and grounded.โฃ

Does offering our time and energy for free truly help our students, or does it undermine the value of what we offer? If we donโt value our own efforts, how can we provide the best experience? And how can we teach our students to value their efforts? Is our reluctance to profit driven by a desire to help, or by the belief that money is wrong? Maybe itโs both๐ฅดโฃ
โฃ
If your students are really in a situation where they canโt even pay their bills- stick to donation-based or sliding scale classes and workshops. But I gotta say, people will go above and beyond for something they want and need. This is why a clear retreat theme and purpose matter- they should shine through in your sales copy, your marketing, and especially your sales page. Make sure your page doesnโt just list whatโs included, but shows the real transformation through thoughtful activities and a layout that reflects the heart of the experience.โฃ

Other than teacher trainings, retreats are one of the few ways yoga teachers can actually get ahead. And in many cases, teachers make ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐ฎ ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ธ-๐น๐ผ๐ป๐ด ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ than they do from a three-month teacher training.โฃ

Iโm not saying to charge as much as you possibly can. Iโm saying to recognize the value of your time, effort, and energyโbecause itโs ๐ณ๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐๐ฒ. โฃ

I paid off my maxed-out credit card. Moved to my dream mountain town. Built this business. Traveled. Keep my cats happy with their bougie, healthy human-grade food. Supported my husband when he was out of work. Treated my mom to one of my retreats. Got the $2 guacamole. Paid off my car. Finally got a massage. Went to the doctor. Bought my family Christmas presentsโfor the first time in years. Helped a friend in need. Replaced my broken iPad. I donate to causes I believe inโฆ just to name a few things.โฃ

If youโre ready to let go of the guilt around charging for your offerings, letโs talk. I help teachers design profitable, stress-free retreats where both they and their students feel fully supportedโcreating unforgettable, transformative experiences that people not only love but want to return to (๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ถ๐น๐ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ).โฃ

5 Things Iโve Changed About The Way I Run Retreats
Some changes came from watching how guests actually move through a retreat. Others came from realizing that a beautiful property and itinerary arenโt enough to make people register ๐ฐ๐ณ ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ฏ.โฃ These are five things I do differently now.โฃ
